CakeMeOmaha Series #10: The Bicycle Cake

Best friend, Zoe, was coming to town and the gang knew we had limited opportunity to celebrate her birthday. Strategically, we decided to hijack the end of a group dinner with a surprise early birthday cake.

Zoe loves biking. Thus, we decided on a bicycle-theme cake from The Cakery. The ordering was completed with some back-and-forth communication via email and phone. This cake was Zoe-personalized!

The following pictures were sent to The Cakery for inspiration.

With only two days notice, The Cakery concocted the below.

The Cakery baked, whipped, and piped a custom cake featuring Zoe in her biking gear and her bicycle. The Tiffany blue color is a nice pop and I love how Zoe is represented in this cake.

Here are side-by-side comparison pictures of real-life and cake-life Zoe and her bike.

At the end of dinner, real-life Zoe was presented the custom bicycle cake.

Zoe was surprised and all smiles! She tilted her head and asked, “Who is the man [on the cake]?” Friend Anne said, “She has boobs!” Laughter ensued within the group. While Zoe did not immediately recognize herself in the cake, she did recognize her bike.

How did the cake taste? The cake was red velvet. I was caught up in the festivities, so I forgot to take a picture of the sliced cake. Zoe liked that it was not a sweet cake. I thought it was okay. I missed the rich cream cheese frosting that makes a red velvet cake. Taste-wise, I recommend Nothing Bundt Cakes‘ red velvet cake over The Cakery.

CakeMeOmaha Series #9: The Avengers Cake Sequel

As evident in past CakeMeOmaha posts, Bliss Old Market Bakery has consistently created custom cakes that look and taste good. This included an awesome Avengers cake for awesome Cade (eldest son) back in September 2012. See the past FoodMeOmaha post, “CakeMeOmaha Series #3: The Avengers Cake”.

On March 7th, 2014, Jonah (youngest son) had an Avengers theme birthday party. Thus, we went back to Bliss Old Market Bakery for an awesome Avengers Cake “sequel” for awesome Jonah. The result…

Custom Avenger Cake from Bliss Old Market Bakery

Bliss Old Market Bakery created an Avenger-tastic nine-inch cake Marvel-ized with fondant and frosting. I love how Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor are individually represented in a quadrant and united in one cake!

The Avengers cake is visually neat to see from different angles. We received many cake compliments at the party.

Thanks to Bliss Old Market Bakery for another awesome Avengers cake!

The Avengers Age of Ultron Movie

By the way, FoodMeOmaha and the boys saw The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie last night. The Avengers sequel has jammed-pack action, great visual effects, laughs, and superhero entertainment! I craved Chinese takeout at one point…

CakeMeOmaha Series #8: The Deadpool Cake

My boyfriend’s son, Cade, turns fourTEEN! (He used to be shorter than me…) In honor of his birthday, we continued the custom cake tradition with a Deadpool cake from Bliss Old Market Bakery. They did not disappoint.

As expected, Bliss Old Market Bakery created a cake that looks good and tastes good.

I enjoyed the yummy, moist chocolate cake. On a minor note, I wish I had ordered the chocolate buttercream. The red-dyed white buttercream was sweeter than I prefer. Note that I am not a big frosting fan.

On a practical note, I also wished Bliss Old Market Bakery packed their cake more securely for transportation. We ordered the non-standard 10″ cake. The box was much larger then the cake and the top cover did not fit the box. Despite cautious, slow driving, the cake was slightly damaged. The cake slid in the box and the box cover scratched the cake.

Regardless of a few “cuts and bruises”, the custom Deadpool cake was a hit! Another awesome cake for awesome Cade, the teenager!

CakeMeOmaha Series #7: The Minecraft Cake

My boyfriend’s son, Cade, loves the popular indie computer game, Minecraft. He has fun building and creating in a block-graphic virtual world. For Cade’s birthday, boyfriend Brian and I did some of our own Minecraft “building.” We custom built (aka ordered) a Minecraft grass block cake from The Cake Gallery.

On September 21st, the cake was revealed and consumed at Cade’s birthday party. Here’s the picture story of the Minecraft birthday cake for Cade!

The cake was nicely wrapped and secured for easy traveling.

Cake unveiling…

The Minecraft cake is revealed!

Minecraft cake close-up. Check out the pixelated effect!

The Minecraft cake was well-crafted by The Cake Gallery! The cake resembles a Minecraft grass block and features two main characters, Steve with a diamond axe and the Creeper creeping on the side. My favorite visual is the pixelated effect with various spray-painted shades and scoring finish. On a picky note, I wished the “CADE” lettering looked more like the Minecraft font as requested.

Ultimately, the Minecraft was a hit with the birthday boy and party goers!

The chocolate cake and white buttercream combination was oreo-esque! While it was tasty, I wished it was more chocolatey.

Thanks to The Cake Gallery for a memorable Minecraft cake for Cade!

CakeMeOmaha Series #6: The Yoga Cake

IMG_4028Sneaky Friends at Maude's Surprise Birthday Party

On Saturday, September 13th, sneaky friends surprised well-loved Maude for her birthday. We celebrated Maude with two of her passions, the beach and yoga.

Clueless Maude was blind-folded and led to a beach-themed pool party. Surprise!!!

Smiles, laughter, and fun ensued. The merriment continued with a yoga cake for the yogi birthday girl.

Here’s the “dog down” on the yoga cake masterpiece from Bliss Old Market Bakery.

Bliss Old Market Bakery created an awesome cake! Bliss delivered on all the requested elements. The Maude-like figure was made out of fondue and hand-painted. Maude’s favorite color purple was incorporated and the trim was based on a Chinese red bracelet symbolizing good luck.

Happy Birthday to yogi Maude!

Maude loved the cake. Here’s her happy cake reaction: “Wow. It’s huge! Very thick! And there’s a Yogi on top!”

Then, Maude ate her miniature head… Self-cannibalism?

IMG_4261IMG_4264

Friend, Kelly, joined in on the cannibalism and ate Maude’s miniature arms! I had a small bite out of curiosity. The fondue was semi-sweet and chewy.

Custom Pink Champagne Yoga Cake

  • Price: $75.00
  • FoodMe YUM Rating: 8.25 out of 10
  • FoodMe Value Rating: 8.0 out of 10

The cake delivered in both looks and taste. Maude’s happy taste reaction:

“When I took my first lick of the frosting…I KNEW, right away, that it was going to be badass good…The thick texture of the cake itself, sans the frosting, was VERY good. I immediately devoured my first slice, making sure I had as much frosting as I had cake…Not too sweet, not too heavy, and not too flimsy. It was a cake that should be enjoyed and devoured at an even pace.”

Bliss Old Market Bakery’s pink champagne cake and butter-cream frosting is a semi-sweet tasty combination.

Namaste to Bliss Old Market Bakery for a fabulous cake!

Special thanks to Annette and Nate Ryan for their house and pool hospitality! Thanks to all the friends who came and joined in the merriment! Thanks to well-loved Maude for the reason for the party!

CakeMeOmaha Series #5: The Traveling Bacon Cake

Zoe and Cake at the Eppley Airfield in Omaha

Zoe and Cake at the Eppley Airfield in Omaha

Using Marco Polo’s last words, “I have only told the half of what I saw.” On the previous post, Zoe and secret cake traveled from Omaha to NYC. They conquered a cancelled flight and tamed a train in the perilous dark to be reunited with FoodMeOmaha and girlfriends.

The story continues. On this episode, the traveling secret cake made by The Cake Gallery is revealed. The birthday girl Kelly is in for a treat!

Lovely Kelly meets the secret cake planned by the ingenious Zoe and created by The Cake Gallery.

Drumroll…

The traveling secret cake is the traveling bacon cake!

Did I mention that the birthday girl is a pescetarian? With love and teasing affection, pescetarian Kelly was given a cake that is bacon in looks only.

Sleep called so the bacon cake was tucked into the refrigerator for the night.  On the next day…

Bacon cake is a strawberry cake. The truth is revealed!

Inside the bacon cake is light, moist strawberry cake. We didn’t have plates so we improvised and used disposable cups. Hungry girlfriends happily mowed on the cake.

The bacon cake born in Omaha by the union of Zoe and The Cake Gallery lived an adventurous life. The bacon cake traveled to NYC to be united with pescetarian birthday girl Kelly and then died a great death in the stomachs of FoodMeOmaha and girlfriends.

Thanks to Zoe and The Cake Gallery for another memorable cake!

CakeMeOmaha Series #4: The Traveling Secret Cake

FoodMeOmaha and girlfriends enjoyed an extended weekend in New York City for Kelly’s birthday. Unbeknownst to Kelly, girlfriend Zoe planned a special birthday cake made by The Cake Gallery.

Zoe headed to NYC a day after us with secret cake in tow. Unexpectedly, her flight was cancelled! Waahhh!!! Zoe and cake scrambled to get a different flight to Newark airport (farther from the city) and landed after midnight (much later than planned).

Ingenious Zoe and cake were troopers. Here is the “Travelocity Gnome” picture story.
