Dexter is a Showtime television drama series about Dexter Morgan who is a forensic blood splatter analyst by day and a serial killer by night. He isn’t an ordinary serial killer. Dexter only kills other killers.
I have been adamantly advised that it’s a crime that I have NOT watched this show. So, what does Dexter and FoodMeOmaha have in common? Bloody good friends and a cake.
On Sunday, September 9th, a group of bloody good friends surprised Maude, an avid Dexter fan, with a Dexter-themed birthday party. I like to call it the “MauDexter” birthday party. Unbeknownst to Maude (who was in a yoga class), we invaded her home and transformed the upstairs to a Dexter-inspired kill room.
The clueless birthday girl returned home to a bloody scene and friends playing dead. Surprise!
Of course, we had to have a birthday cake. Creative gal pal, Kelly (also an avid Dexter fan), was the mastermind behind the cake. The cake was made by The Cake Gallery and Dexterfied by Kelly. It was bloody awesome.
Kelly (pictured above) shared that The Cake Bakery was very easy to work with and happy to make accommodations to any cake. I asked Kelly about her creative process. She explained:
“I wanted something to look relatively normal… but have enough color (red sprinkles) to give some morbidity (like blood). I thought about a season from Dexter that had fingers cut off (souvenir) from the ice truck killer and decided that was how to decorate the cake.”
The fingers are plastic severed fingers found at Mangelsen’s Halloween section. Kelly reviewed Dexter scenes from the show and meticulously painted each fingernail with the right color (including some chips) for authenticity.
The result is one happy birthday girl.
