Taste Restaurant: More Tasty Dishes

2015 Update: Taste Restaurant is closed.

My long-time gal pal and former Omahan, Ambika, came to town for a visit and she had her restaurant cravings. The important question was asked, “Where do you want to eat tonight?”. She threw a curve ball and did not have the expected answer of “Bonefish Grill” or “Taste of Thailand”. Ambika replied, “Taste.”

So, on Tuesday, March 20th, Ambika, Michelle, and I had a girlfriend trio dinner at Taste Restaurant. Coincidentally (or not), I had recently written about Taste (See “Taste Restaurant is Tasty“.) This round I will be sharing different tasty dishes from Taste Restaurant.

We had a late dinner at about 8pm. Taste wasn’t busy like my previous visit on a Saturday night. Only a few tables were occupied so we were seated immediately without a reservation. Our waitress was friendly and provided good service.

First order of business was the wine. We decided to share a bottle of the 337 Cabernet Sauvignon. Ambika and Michelle prefer non-sweet, dry wines; whereas, I typically prefer sweet, non-dry wines. All of us liked the 337 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet agreed with my palette despite my usual wine preference. It has a nice red depth with a slight dry end.

For appetizers, we ordered the sweet potato fries and smoked salmon and avocado egg rolls.

The sweet potato fries did not disappoint as always. These are my favorite sweet potato fries in Omaha to date. The sweet potato has a nice crispy outer accented with chopped green onions and dipped in a delicious basil aioli sauce. The aioli sauce makes this dish. Tasty!

The smoked salmon and avocado egg rolls dish had a charming presentation. I liked the Taste logo recreated with the sauces. However, the egg rolls are not as tasty as their other dishes. The smoked salmon reminded me of canned tuna and the combination of ingredients did not go well together. The sauce was good but the egg rolls were just okay for me. I prefer the avocado egg rolls from Cheesecake Factory and Kona Grill and the chicken southwest egg rolls from Cheesecake Factory and Chili’s.

For our main entrees, we ordered baja fish tacos (two dishes) and big kid mac and cheese to share.  Each main entree came with the house salad that I enjoy.

Ambika and Michelle did not favor the salad as much as I did. I now realize that this salad is not suited for those that do not like sweet. The balsamic honey dressing along with the craisins was overly sweet for Ambika’s taste. Michelle liked the salad but thought it was a tad too sweet.

Ambika gave me her salad so more for me!

The picture from my droid phone does not do justice to Taste’s baja fish tacos.  Oh my yumminess. The tempura fried, flakey fish, crunchy chipotle cabbage, pico de gallo, tasty sauce, and flour tortilla combined in one bite is delicious!  A great marriage of flavors and textures. All of us loved this dish. This is worth ordering again.

The big kid mac and cheese is customized for the “big kid.” You can add veggies for $2, chicken for $3, and shrimp for $4. It is a good size portion as well.  We ordered the mac and cheese with veggies. The creamy white cheese sauce pleased the palette but I wanted more flavor. I liked the addition of the asparagus which added a nice texture and taste to the mac and cheese.

The meal does not end here!  For dessert, we ordered the chocolate lava cake with  vanilla ice cream.

Warm, rich chocolate lava cake that overtakes your taste buds then followed by the the cold vanilla ice cream is very delicious. If you like rich chocolate then this dish should please your palette.
